Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy III: Does Translation Really Matter? By: Squire Nomad (Uh huh, an alias) So, you've got your copy of Final Fantasy III. You notice the nice, yet totally wrong (the X, Y, A, B buttons aren'ts on the left, they're on the right side of the controller) logo for Super Nintendo, the SquareSoft logo, it's licensed, made in Japan, and it's SNS-F6-USA (maybe?). You are wondering why you see the six? Then you start hearing about Final Fantasy VI, and you realize it's your copy of FF3!!! You scream, but then you say, "Oh, nothing was really changed." Hah, you are wrong! You won't believe your eyes. The third installment is the six, in a land called Japan. How do I know? I turn on the SNES, with the game in there. When the clouds clear, what is this? "Final Fantasy VI" instead of "Final Fantasy III". This October release is April '94 for Japan. While the RAM may not sound shocking to you compared to other games I have played (Dragon Quest III and stuff), but the graphics and music is something that leaves Dragon Quest in the dust, not really. You all whined saying FF7 took two years to make, well, right after the year Final Fantasy V was released (that's real stupid it took them a couple of months on that game and give us a crappy remake), Square hastily worked on the sixth installment. Of course, they weren't going to tell you, instead, they told us other games coming. This game has so many characters, some have no motive!!! This was remade as well, but no graphic remake, a few add-ons, FMV instead of our Mode 7 (which appears still, but not in the SNES movies), and sadly, Final Fantasy Collection that packs Final Fantasy IV, V, VI is nothing to brag about, and the US release called Final Fantasy Antholgy, which excludes FF4, will be even worse. Sure, that old man that may help appears in FFVI, but the same 16-bit graphics exist, and sadly, you can't do the Lete Loop. I don't own and of the remakes, surprisingly, but I can contrast to all the versions of Final Fantasy VI. There's a large force, magic beasts. There's machinery, and everything, and 1000 years... Well, 1000 years ago, a war existed, and to my knowledge, Square never named this war, but there was a force they used, it's called "Magic". Well, it's not an exact translation, but in contrast to FF3, FF6 has no "War of Magi" nor "Espers". Instead, it was a magic war, and Fantasy Beasts. When Biggs, or Wedge, whoever, start up the game, in FF6, they talk about 1000 years ago, not the town. So, we run into our foe, Emperor Gastra (sorry I ever said Gehstra, but it's Gastra, not Gehstra or Gestahl), and Cephka (no real translation here), the real EVIL. They are the ones brainwashing Tina, yet she is called Terra in FF3, and why? Simple, you think that the translator wanted any real names in this game? Well, another translation thing... Remember in FF4/ FF2 (US) how it was uh... Palom, and then it said Black Wizard? Well, in FF3, this was no more. In FF6, however, it was still there. So, I will show you what I mean. In FF6, characters have job names, they are: Aside from this, many expressions and type of talk was different. The kind of talk they have is what those idiot friends of mine say I do with x people... Adolescent imbeciles... Many things they say are plain crazy, sometimes your Katakana ability won't help you. They also do a lot of cursing, mainly the word that is a synonym for feces. In one point, Woosely had to translate so many "damn"s into "hate"s, you could easily lose count... Back to people. To have me tell you EVERY translation, I'd need to make a full booklet, so I'll tell you few things. Well, many things in commands were translated. Here: Tina- same Due to the nature of, well, the American society, there are too many things to list after this. There are too many spell names, conversations, and things to change, but I'm not sure if the scene where Celes's underwear fall off was cut or not, but basicly, you can't say they edited out scenes, just other things. I will use up my last bit of social life to tell you just what the spell names were. Here's some stuff to make you hit your head over.
