The popular opinion is that Peach is just a helpless bimbo. It is always she that Mario must rescue from the Bowser's clutches. In Mario Kart 64 Peach drives around uttering different phrases like "Take that!" and "Here we go" in her light, girlish voice and she wasn't much of a driver either...
The true side of Peach
This has also been my opinion for a long time until I a time ago decided
to take a closer look at the subject. When I did so, other sides of Peach's
personality began to appear.
Think about it, who else but a strong independent woman would
be able to rule a whole kingdom almost all by herself? Then bear in mind
that this kingdom that she is ruling is constantly being invaded by Bowser
and his troops.
That can not be too easy!
Then we must remember the heroic act that Peach did in (the non Japanese version of) Super Mario Bros 2, being the best choice of characters with her great hovering ability.
Peach the Go-Kart driver
In Super Mario Kart Peach was surely one of the worst choices of
drivers, but again what do you expect from a full time ruler?
Frankly, it is really no big surprise that Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong Jr.
and the others are much better Go-Kart drivers than Peach. They all have
lots of time to practice.
When Peach is busy ruling the kingdom Mario, Luigi and the others are
out racing around the tracks... No wonder they are better drivers than
she is.
The kidnapping bit.
What would could you possibly do if you were the victim of a hideous Koopa
King's regular kidnappings?
There is really not much to do!
t is not Peach's fault that the castle guards are not able to keep Bowser
from kidnaping her.
If you ask me Peach is a strong and admirable woman. She may have a rather girlish style but that is a part of the role as a classic fairy tale princess...

The comics
We must not forget that Peach did save Earth in the TV episode ''7 Continents
for 7 Koopas'' and in the "Super Mario Adventures" comic Peach
easily overpowered the Koopa kids, it took her only one blow, as oposed
to Mario having to hit them 3 times.
Super Mario RPG
Another interesting thought on Peach is the fact she can beat up Smithy
pretty well, but she doesn't attack Bowser. But I guess if a Giant turtle
comes by, kidnaps you, and flies up over 40 feet in the air in a copter,
you wouldn't want to distract him while he's driving.
