| What's
happening these days? By: Gengar1022 *CLICK* Dum-dum-dumdumdumdum--dum. That's the usual tune I would here from my old NES when I was a child. It was such an inviting sound, as if the game itself asked me to play. True the graphics weren't as great as some games today, but it was still a great game. Now that I have you thinking of older games, let's talk about what's going on in the gaming industry today. Today people are obsessed with the visual and sound quality of the game, paying little attention to story or plot but just looking for something to "pass the time" Now think about this, if you ask a true gamer which system was their first, they will most likely say the NES, but ask a younger gamer, and they will say an N64 or Playstation. That makes me sad. Some time ago, probably a year, one of my friends came over. He had gotten a Super Nintendo but he didn't have Mega Man X so I let him play my copy of it at my house. Soon after he was done playing, I pulled out a copy of Mega Man 3 (a personal favorite) and started playing. Immediately I heard him say "This stinks compared to Mega Man X. The graphics are too cheesy! Play Mega Man X!" This made me cringe, but I held my tongue because he was born much later than when the NES came out. That's the bottom line though. Already we live in a world where graphics make the game. The NES is considered a "Crummy old piece of machinery" and the SNES is getting to be that way as well. Most people are looking to the N64, the Playsation, the upcoming Dreamcast and their Computer for games with good graphics. Now I have nothing against good graphics but think about this, where will the N64 be when Nintendo comes out with a new system? The fact is that as gaming consoles grow older, they lose their thrill to the younger markets. I am now 15 and I still enjoy to turn on my old NES and play Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda but I also enjoy playing my N64 and playing Mario 64 and Zelda 64 as well. I guess my point is, we can't let the good old games die out. Some day I hope to have some kids of my own and be able to pull out my NES and tell them stories of how it made such a great impact on my life with its "cheesy graphics" and "bad sound" and how I could remember playing it with my family. Thank you. |
