Link's Shadow VS. Oni Link

It happens every week in the Nintendo Land Stadium. Two game immortals (or obscurities, depending on the match) enter the arena to battle it out for the honor, the glory, or just because they feel like kicking the other guy's… As you can see, we're getting a little off topic so let's head to the arena to see the battle.

The stadium packed and the crowd consist mainly of video game character who enjoy seeing some one besides themselves get beat up for a change and, of course, Nintendo fans of all ages who love to see their favorites duke it out. Two spotlights center in on the two doors of the red and green commenter's booth. Right on cue, the Mario Brothers enter and take their seats as the crowd cheers at their arrival (except for the section where the villains sit but you can't please everyone).
 
"It's-a me, Mario," Luigi groans slightly at Mario's overused catch phrase but crowd goes wild anyways.
 
"And it's-a me, Luigi," Luigi sighs inside as he says his non-trademarked and less used catch phrase (it still gets cheers from the crowds).
 
"Thank you all for coming," Mario said calming the cheers (not using his accent because his contract only requires him to do it for his games and whenever his catch phrases are used), "and have we got a good match for you tonight."
 
"Both fighters are straight from Hyrule but with a couple hundred years between their appearances," said Luigi, setting up the mood for the fight. "However one other thing they have in common is their dark origins."
 
Luigi said the last part with an ominous tone that heightened the excitement for the fans (did nothing for the game characters since they dealt either with that stuff every day or were the cause of it).
 
"Anyways, let's get on to the introductions now," Mario said and then turned to Luigi. "Would you do the honors?"
 
"Happy to," Luigi replied. He cleared his throat and began to speak in a deep announcer's voice.
 
"In the red corner we have Oni Link, that is young Link the First…"
 
"Whoa, wait a second," Mario interrupted, "Link the First?"
 
Luigi heaved a great sigh since this always came up whenever any Link (or Zelda for that matter) was battling.
 
"Let me try to explain it to you for the last time," he said slowly. "Link the first is the first in the line who dealt with Gannon when he first appeared."
 
"Huh?" Mario replied, still confused
 
"The one from the N64 games!!!" Luigi screamed fed up with Mario getting it wrong.
 
"Oh yeah," Mario said, irritating Luigi further.
 
Getting himself back together, Luigi continued, "Link will be wearing the Fierce Deity's Mask he got while fighting Majora's Mask in Termia. It is said to have dark powers but I think he can handle it. So give a warm welcome to player #1."
 
At that moment young Link rides into the arena on Epona with the crowd cheering. He gets off into the arena and gives Epona to Malon who take the horse away. Then he reaches into that magical invisible poach that a game characters have (they once considered selling them to the public you know) and pulled out the Fierce Deity's Mask. Putting on the mask Link changed from a young Hylian boy into a tall dark being bearing some resemblance to adult Link. The power he radiated awed the fans and made the heroes (and some of the villains) feel uneasy.
 
"Our second opponent comes from the time of Link the Third," Luigi continued and then he turns to Mario to avoid what he sees coming. "The one from the NES games."
 
"Oh I know," Mario replied, "he's the one who reassembled the Triforce of Wisdom, defeated Gannon again, found the Triforce of Courage while avoiding minions of Gannon who wanted to kill him to resurrect their leader?"
 
Stunned at Mario actually knowing one of his Links Luigi stuttered a reply.
 
"Uh, yes that one," Regaining himself, he continued. "Oni Link will face Link's Shadow who was created by Thunderbird to kill Link. His power is great so I suspect we're in for a good match. So let's welcome player #2."
 
A spotlight lights up the corner that Link's Shadow should be in but nothing is there. The crowd (and the announcers for that matter) are confused and Oni Link looks around for his target. What he doesn't notice is the shadow cast behind him pulling out its sword, raising it over its head, and rising from the ground. As it's about to strike Oni Link has a flash of insight and rolls forward, barley avoiding getting his head split by the attack. He stands up, spinning around, once he regains his footing and puts a hand to the hilt of his sword strapped to his back.
 
"That was a dirty trick," Luigi said disgusted, being the first to comprehend what happened.
 
"I agree with you little bro," Mario replied, "but let's get this fight underway."
 
Luigi nodded and in unison they said, "GAME START!"
 
Oni Link pulled out his sword and taking it two handed began to circle Link's Shadow. The wraith pulled his shield off his back and did the same.
 
"Both fighters have their strengths," Mario said hushed, feeling the tension of the moment, "Oni Link uses a big sword and can shoot beams at his foe. However since he has to hold it with both hands he doesn't have a shield."
 
"While Link's Shadow has smaller sword he has his shield for protection," Luigi added, "and we don't know if he hasn't picked up any new moves since his last defeat."
 
Just then Oni Link charged the shadow and did an upward slice that would cut his foe from his right hip to his left shoulder. That is, if he landed the blow. Link's shadow leaped up over the strike and pointed his sword down for a downward thrust. However, Oni Link also wasn't going to let himself go down in one hit. He flipped backwards and took advantage of the shadow's sword being stuck temporarily in mat and lunged forward in a jump slash. Link's Shadow dodged out of the way, leaving his sword stuck in the floor.
 
"That wasn't a wise move for Link's Shadow," Mario said, breaking the silence, "now he's defenseless."
 
"He must have some kind of…" Luigi trailed off as he saw what happened next.
 
Link's Shadow snapped his fingers and his sword dissolved and reappeared in his hand.
 
"Wait a second, he can't do that," Mario exclaimed, "uh can he?"
 
"If you mean if it is against the rule then no," Luigi answered, "but if you mean is he able to then I can't really answer your question."
 
Oni Link decided to approach the problem differently. He stood there and concentrated for a second and the launched a bolt of energy from his sword at his opponent. Link's Shadow blocked it but it sent energy through the shield damaging him slightly. Seeing that his enemy way taking some damage, Oni Link sent so more bolts at his foe. With his shield not giving him full protection, the shadow had to rely more on his dodging skills.
 
Round after round of bolts came at Link's Shadow who managed to dodge most of them. But he was caught off guard when Oni Link charged him again and their swords clashed together.
 
"You know what Mario," Luigi commented, "Link is acting much more aggressive then usual."
 
"Yeah, I noticed that too," Mario replied. "You think the mask is having an effect on him?"
 
"I'm afraid so," Luigi said back. They turned and watched the impressive display of swordsman ship some more.
 
"I just thought of something, if Oni Link wins will Link be able to regain control of himself?" Luigi asked.
 
"For our sakes, let's hope so," Mario replied and that caused some real depression to settle on the two.
 
Back on the battlefield, Oni Link tried an overhead slash, which Link's Shadow held up with his shield. Determined to win, Oni Link leaned his weight forward pushing the shadow to the ground. During this Link's Shadow held his sword back and it began to glow with energy.
 
"Is he doing what I think he's doing?" Luigi said, recognizing the upcoming attack.
 
Oni Link either didn't notice or didn't care and continued to press on his attack. That was a mistake. Link's Shadow released the stored energy and pulled off the trademarked whirling blade attack that was passed down from generation to generation of heroes. It caught Oni Link across the gut and forced him to back off his attack.
 
"How did he do that?" Mario asked Luigi, who simply shrugged. "I thought only good guys could do that."
 
"Well, the only explanation I can think of is it's Link's shadow, therefore it should be able to do moves that Link of any generation it's facing could," Luigi replied. "Either that or he's relatively good compared to Oni Link making him a hero."
 
"That isn't good," Mario said shaking his head.
 
If Oni Link was angry before the he was truly furious now. He began a relentless attack that put Link's Shadow on the defensive. The fact that Oni Link could put much more power behind the blade then the shadow was becoming a very clear advantage in the fight. But given the fact Oni Link was a dark god and Link's Shadow was well a shadow, neither of them was going to tire physically. It would just be a matter of time before one made a mental slip-up. The fight went on for what seemed like hours but in reality it was most likely only a few minutes.
 
Then Link's Shadow back flipped away from Oni Link and snapped his fingers. Then multiple images of him appear and formed a circle around the dark warrior. Mario and Luigi were frantically flipping through old Link II strategy guides and wondering where that move came from. Regardless of this, the shadows attacked mercilessly. They swarmed Oni Link on all sides and while he defeated some, both with blade and bolts, he didn't hit the real one.
 
Badly hurt, he watched as they formed ranks again as they prepared for another attack. Oni Link concentrated and put aside his mask-induced rage, knowing that if he failed to hit the real one he was dead. The next few seconds seem to go by in slow motion. The shadows charged forward for the kill and at the same time Oni Link charged them. The first few ranks of them were felled with a few quick swipes but Oni Link didn't pay attention to them. He knock over a few more when he found the one he was looking for and knocked the sword out of the real Shadow Links. Stunned that his enemy had found him, Link's Shadow barely had time to raise his shield in defense, it turned out that it was a useless gesture. Oni Link kept his sword parallel to the ground and jabbed forward, punching a hole through the shield like it was tin foil and it kept going right through the shadow. All the other shadows disappeared and the head fell forward after Oni Link pulled his sword out and disintegrated. For a while there was nothing but silence, then the crowd burst into cheers and Mario and Luigi rushed down form the announcers box with Oni Link's medal.
 
"That was a spectacular finish," Mario said excitedly, "it came down pretty close but we knew you'd win right Luigi?"
 
"Yeah that was great, spectacular, amazing…Link? Are you listening to me?" Luigi's excitement dulled as he saw that Link was looking down at that ground.
 
"That name…" he said, trailing off at the end. Then he suddenly looked up, eyes burning soullessly, and thrust his sword at the two plumbers. "NEVER call me by that weak little boy's name again."
 
The brothers back off slowly and Mario managed to stammer a reply, "W-what do y-you m-m-mean?"
 
"That boy is simply the vessel for me, the new god of this world," Oni Link said with an evil grin. "I am more powerful then anything. After all, could he beat the Majora without my help? No. And now the world is mine for the taking."
 
"But first," he regarded the brothers coldly, "I'll get rid of you two."
 
He raised his sword to strike the two helpless plumbers, and then swung it down. However the blow was stopped by another blade.
 
"Who dares!?" Oni Link snarled.
 
"I do," the blocker answered and there was a gasp from the crowds.
 
"It's Link the First!" Luigi exclaimed.
 
"I don't care who you are," Oni Link growled, "just get out of my way and I'll let you live."
 
"No, I won't back down," Link said firmly.
 
"Then die!!!!" Oni Link yelled as he attacked his descendent.
 
Link blocked him again.
 
"Remember who you are," he said, determined to stop he evil. "You're a hero, the first of a line of many heroes. Don't let the mask control you."
 
For a while they just stood there, an internal conflict going on in Oni Link. Then his eyes no longer had the look of a soulless evil, but of a frightened child. Knowing what had to be done, he griped both hands to his face and (with great effort) took off the mask.
 
Just as it seemed all was well, young Link's shadow lengthened and rose his sword to attack.
 
"Look out," the older Link yelled and divided forward, knocking young Link out of the way but taking the blow in the process.
 
Link's Shadow rose from the floor and spoke in a dark voice.
 
"Silly child, did you really think darkness could kill a shadow?" he said, tasting the triumph within his grasp. "I'll kill both of you and the I'll be able to resurrect Gannon who will destroy all."
 
With that he attacked young Link who dodged out of the way. He knew there was no way to win a sword-to-sword match but he didn't have to.
 
Link's Shadow turned around for another attack but saw his foe take out his bow and draw an arrow.
 
"Arrows can't hurt me child," he said, disregarding any kind of threat, and charged forward for a final attack.
 
Young Link notched the arrow and took careful aim. Before he let it go I charged up with energy and became a Light arrow. Link's Shadow stopped dead in his tracks, realizing his mistake but it was too late. The youngest Link let the arrow go and it hit Link's Shadow right in the center of his chest.
 
Pure Light energy rippled over him and caused him to disintegrate again (and for good).
 
Link the Third recovered and saw what happened and commented, "I wish I one those when I fought him."
 
Mario and Luigi finally managed to get their senses back together, still a little shaken by what happened.
 
"Well, I think we've learned a lesson," Luigi said to his brother.
 
"You mean never put on strange mask?" Mario asked.
 
"Err, something like that," Luigi replied back.
 
"Anyways that's all for tonight's battle" Mario said. "Good fight."
 
Luigi continued, "Good night.

Link's Shadow VS. Oni Link

As the crowd waits in anticipation for the day's deathmatch a voice is transmitted from numerous speakers around the stadium.
 
Voice: Welcome all to today's deathmatch, which will be between Oni Link and Links Shadow. And now will you please give around of applause for our hosts the Super Mario Bros.
 
Mario drunkenly walks into the hosting box followed by a calm Luigi

Mario: Ummm… Itsa me.. Ahh…. What's my name again Little Green
 
Fairy?
 
Luigi: (Sighing) Mario. Jeez Mario, I thought I told you to lay off the Grog before we have to host a deathmatch. Oh well. Welcome folks to today's deathmatch between Oni Link and Links Shadow. Now as you should all know, by putting on the
 
Fierce Deity Mask in The Legend of Zelda, Majoras Mask, Link Became to strong enough to defeat Majoras Mask and…
 
Mario cuts off Luigi
 
Mario: Was it a pretty mask or a scary mask my little fairy friend?
 
Luigi: It was just a mask Mario and I'm not a fairy I'm your brother
 
Luigi remember?
 
Mario: Whatever you say my little friend. Now, you're telling the story all Wrong, you see, this Link fellow put on this Fierce Deity mask And was turned into a big flying chicken, remember, and, and, And.
 
Luigi: Its ok Mario, now, when Link put on the Fierce Deity mask he did not become a chicken, he was turned into Oni Link and with the Magnificent power of the mask he defeated Majora and saved the world of Termina from the falling Moon.
 
So lets welcome our first contestant, Oni Link.
 
The magnificent form of Oni Link suddenly appears out of a blinding blue column of light.
 
Mario: And our second contestant is from the land of GoolyWallyWumpter. He is…
 
Luigi: Do shut up Mario. Our second contestant was one of Links sworn
 
Enemies. He appeared in the Water Temple in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and has had a couple of other appearances
 
In other Zelda games, please welcome Shadow Link.
 
The crowd erupts as a Black figure enters the arena.
 
Mario & Luigi: Game Start
 
A burly Hammer Bro whacks a large gong to signal the start of the match
 
Shadow Link: Come on mister im so big and strong, show me what you can do.
 
Luigi: Wow, Links Shadow is really taking it to him but it looks as though Oni Link has a plan.
 
Without saying a word Oni Link produced a huge sword and started to size up the approaching enemy up. Links shadow also produced a weapon, a large Hammer.
 
Links shadow: Come on big guy, gimme your best shot.
 
Oni Link jut smiled and nodded.
 
In a matter of seconds Oni Links huge sword went straight through the shoulder of Links Shadow.
 
Mario: Hehe, that had to hurt, hehe.
 
Mario then fell out of his chair and started sleeping

Cringing in pain L.S. (Links Shadow) managed to get back up. Outraged he ran at O.L. (Oni Link) and tried to get a slash at O.L.'s chest but it was blocked by O.L.'s shield and then countered with a bash to the head with O.L.'s shield, but that just seemed to make L.S. mad. He ran at O.L. with his axe raised high. O.L. got ready to block the blow with his shield but he was taken by surprise as he was hit in the thigh area by the axe.
 
Luigi: What a tactic. Oni Link just fell for that one
 
O.L. then realised what has happened. He had expected L.S. to come charging at him and swing his axe to hit him, but instead L.S. had thrown the axe moments before O.L. put up his shield to block something that wasn't coming.

As Oni Link stood up the crowd could see the anger in his ever glowing eyes.
 
Luigi: This doesn't look good!
 
He came charging across the arena and in one movement swung his sword.

The next ten seconds no-one saw, but we were told what happened at the end. Oni Link swung his sword and hit Links Shadow in the leg which made him fall over. He then repeatedly slashed at Links Shadow until he raised his sword high to finish him off, but then turned and walked away from the beaten opponent.
 
Oni Link received the deathmatch winning medal and his first ever deathmatch win.

Link's Shadow VS. Oni Link

The stadium where deathmatches are held is lit brightly in anticipation of this Friday death match.
   
Mario and Luigi enter the commentator's booth through their respective
 
doors, green for Luigi, and red for Mario.
 
Mario: It'sa meeee...
 
Luigi: Oh no...
 
The crowd goes wild with Mario's constant catchphrase.
 
Mario: We certainly had a heck of a death match last week, Yoshi vs.
 
Chocobo, didn't we.
 
The crowd cheers in agreement.
 
Luigi: Yes, but we have a pretty good death match tonight, too.
 
Mario: Definitely!
 
Luigi: Player One is a deity to the sight, Oni-Link!
 
Oni-Link enters and shows off, shooting a beam with his sword.
 
Mario: Player Two is equally as tough, the shadowguythingymabob, Shadow
 
Link!
 
Luigi: ... Shadow Link the First.
 
Mario: The First?
 
Luigi: Here we go again...
 
Shadow Link is hidden in the shadows until he sneaks up on Oni, surprising him.
 
Mario: To coin a Nintendo catch phrase, HERE WE GOOOOOO!
 
Oni begins with a beam from his sword, but Link's Shadow deflects it.
 
Shadow: Ha! I know your every move, no I do not play for the NY Giants , I am your shadow, so make your move.
 
Oni: Kay.
 
Oni backflips over Shadow, and stabs him in the back. Shadow then moves out of the way. Oni readies another backflip, but this time Shadow is ready.
Shadow hits Oni with his sword in mid-air, causing him to fall.
 
Oni (infuriated): WHAT'S UP WITH THIS!! I HAD MORE VOTES, I CAN'T LOSE.
 
Oni-Link with all his rage desperately strikes Shadow with his sword, but Shadow (almost effortlessly) blocks it. Shadow, though, is caught off-guard by the Fierce Deity's power, and falls to the ground, or so it seems.
 
Shadow (faking): ARRGH
 
Oni (stepping on Shadow): Yes, I have won.
 
Shadow then grabs Oni's leg and hurls him to the other side of the arena.
 
Shadow: Fool! You fell for the ol' pretend-I-lost trick!
 
Oni: It ain't over 'till it's over, badtasteintunicboy.
 
Shadow: Don't make fun of my very stylish custom made black tunic!
 
Oni, who has his shadow's guard down, uses the only other attack that with work on Shadow, the Spinning Sword attack.
 
Shadow: Noooooo!
 
Shadow Link is then banished to the void beyond.
 
Mario (sniffing back tears): Well *sniff* that's our death match for tonight.
 
Luigi: What's wrong, Mario.
 
Mario: I lost my bet.....

Link's Shadow VS. Oni Link

Mario: It's a me, Mario!
 
Luigi: I'm a Luigi, number 1! We have a special guest tonight, please welcome
Tael!
 
Mario: eh? Tael?
 
Luigi: Mario, it's the other fairy from Majora's Mask.
 
Mario: Oh, right!
 
Tael comes flying down and floats next to Luigi.
 
Luigi: Welcome Tael, how's Tatl and the Skull Kid?
 
Tael: Oh, they're doing quite fine.
 
Luigi: Now to announce our contestants, Please welcome Kid Link the 1st!
 
Mario: Eh? Kid Link the 1st?
 
Luigi: Mario, you remember video game history class? You spent all you're
time passing love notes to Peach?
 
Mario: Yeah.
 
Luigi: The rest of us were studying history! Kid Link the 1st is from the N64
games!
 
Mario: Oh right!
 
Luigi: (sigh)
 
(Link walks out and puts on his Fierce Deity's Mask. He becomes Oni Link.)
 
Tael: Oni Link is going to kick that shadow's butt!
 
Mario: and Player 2 is Link's Shadow called Link's Shadow.
 
Luigi and Tael: (sigh)
 
(Link's Shadow steps out and takes out his sword.)
 
Luigi: Now, let's get ready to rumble!!!!!
 
Oni Link: I can beat you shadow! I've beaten you once and so will my
descendant Link the 3rd.
 
Mario: Eh? Link the 3rd?
 
Luigi: Mario, he's the Link from the NES games.
 
Mario: Oh, right! Are you sure, Luigi?
 
Luigi: Yes!
 
Mario: Ok.
 
Link's Shadow begins the fight with an elbow to the head. Oni Link quickly
reacts by kicking Link's Shadow in the stomach.
 
Mario: They seem to be evenly matched. No?
 
Tael: No.
 
Link's Shadow: Give it up, you can't win!
 
Link's Shadow and Oni Link take out their swords and start a sword fight.
Link's Shadow jumps over Oni Link and hits in the back. Link's Shadow aims
his sword at Oni Link's throat. Oni Link quickly hits Link's Shadow with a
Deku Nut.
 
Tael: Yeah! Go Oni Link!
 
Luigi: Well, it has been an interesting match so far.
 
Mario: So far.
 
Tael: Hey, Luigi who do you have you're bets on?
 
Luigi: I'd say Oni Link.
 
Oni Link is quickly hitting Link's Shadow with more deku nuts. Link's Shadow
reacts with an uppercut to the chin. Oni Link uses a Ice Arrow on Link's
Shadow. Link's Shadow is partly frozen.
 
Link's Shadow: If you think this will hold me you're wrong!
 
Link's Shadow breaks free and continues to attack. He hits Oni Link in the
stomach and in the face. Oni Link tries a Fire Arrow, but it fails. Oni Link
then tries a Light Arrow. Link's Shadow is hit, but not severely damaged.
 
Oni Link: Just give up.
 
Link's Shadow: No!
 
Oni Link fires a beam from his sword and Link's Shadow dodges it. Link's
Shadow hits Link with a beam from his sword. Oni Link tries a Fire Arrow
again and then another Ice Arrow, both fail.
 
Oni Link: He's too fast!
 
Link's Shadow: Darn right!
 
Link's Shadow hits Oni Link with a kick to the stomach. Oni Link remembers
the time he fought Link's Shadow in the Water Temple. He then sees Link the
3rd fighting Link's Shadow. Oni Link decides to keep on fighting, but it
seems helpless. Oni Link quickly gets up and hits Link's Shadow with a few
kicks. Oni Link takes out his bow again and puts in a regular arrow, Fire
Arrow, Ice Arrow and a Light Arrow.
Oni Link fires them and Link's Shadow is hit by all of them and stunned. Oni
Link takes this opportunity to charge his sword and fire his beam at Link's
Shadow.
 
Luigi: Link's Shadow is not going to be recovering from that any time soon,
Oni Link is the winner!
 
Tael: Yay!
 
Mario: Well done.
 
Oni Link takes off the mask and becomes Link again. he takes the medal and
holds it up. Another victory for the Link family.
