Deathmatch summary
Mother
Brain VS. Sigma
Once
again the stadium in Nintendo Land is filled with all the heroes
and villains of Nintendo Land. All of whom come to watch two opponents
go against each other in mortal combat (no, not the game) fighting
for honor, glory, and all that other good stuff (unless they're
evil, then they just want to kill each other). The lights dim and,
consequently, so does the noise. Two spotlight then focus on the
red and green announcer's booth and out come the hosts.
"It's-a me, Mario!" the famous red plumber yells his famous,
trademarked line.
"And it's-a me, Luigi" says the equally famous green plumber.
And with that they stop using their accents because it's irritating
to keep writing err, talking like that.
"Welcome one and all to tonight's deathmatch!" Mario says,
getting cheers from the crowds (except from the villain section,
but that's expected). "And this one promises to be big, right
Luigi."
"Absolutely. Especially since this match features two fighters
who have had yet to make an appearance here," Luigi then pulls
up the list to check
the combatants. "Our first contestant comes all the way from
the year 21XX. The leader of the Maverick forces and Mega Man X's
arch-nemesis, Sigma!"
With that Sigma teleports in, wearing a red cape and looking like
he did in X1. A single spotlight shines on him while the rest of
the field is dark.
"Our second contestant comes all the way from the planet Zebes,
or at least what's left of it," Mario says continuing the introductions
and then pauses for dramatic effect, "mastermind of the two
Metroid incidents and leader of the Zebesian Space Pirates, Mother
Brain!"
There's a large rush of air as Ridley flies in, carrying Mother
Brain in her life support system. Hovering a little bit off the
ground, the lord of Nofair gently sets his leader down on the ground
and then flies back up into the stands and takes a seat next to
Kraid (don't ask how he fits in there, okay?). Again, only one spotlight
illuminates the giant evil genius"Everything's in place?"
the dragon says to his fellow cohort in a near indecipherable mess
of growls, roars, and other noises as he settles in his
seat.
"Yes," the giant mutant lizard replies in the same language,
"that pile of scrap stands no chance against Mother Brain."
"Shut up you freaks!" snaps a Maverick who bears a close
resemblance to Boba Fett of Star Wars fame.
"Sigma won't lose to some overgrown brain in a jar," Vile
says with a sneer (or a least he would if he had a visible mouth)."
"We shall see," Ridley replies and turns back towards
the match.
Sigma eyes his opponent over and sneers, "You stand no chance
against me, I'll only need one form for this battle."
He then crosses his arms and give Mother Brain a look of disgust,
"This is simply a waste of my time."
<Don't underestimate me fool,> Mother Brain says telepathically,
<or you'll be the one who doesn't stand a chance.>
The reply is lost on the Maverick and any robot in the room since
you can't communicate telepathically with something that doesn't
have a mind, not that it matters to Mother Brain.
"Now that pleasantries are over with," Mario says, unaware
of most of the conversations that took place, "let's begin."
"GAME START!" Mario and Luigi yell in unison.
With that the field lights turn on, revealing that it has been tampered
with.
"Hey! What the...," Vile yells while Kraid and Ridley
laugh.
All over the battle arena are various mounted laser cannons while
a few Rinka float around.
"It's legal," Ridley says was a hideous grin, "after
all, those guns are all part of her first form."
Luigi holds up the rulebook and agrees, "Yes, he's right (though
I hate to admit it."
Sigma simply shruges, "It doesn't what it has. It's no match
for me."
With that he throws off his cape, pulls put his beam saber and takes
a fighting pose. All the guns that surround Mother Brain then point
at him.
"En garde," Sigma taunts then lunges forward.
<Prepare to die you walking scrap pile!> Mother Brain shouts
and all the guns unleash a hail off laser bolts at their target.
Sigma parries most of them but some get through and knock him away
though the damage is not severe. However as he lies there more of
the guns hit him, knocking him further away.
Picking himself up and wiping away some dripping oil from his mouth
he grins, "So you can fight back hard after all? Let's see
you take this."
Sigma then throws his beam saber at Mother Brain, who deflects it
with some cannon shots. But Sigma had expected that and, in that
moment of distraction, is now different colors.
"It appears that Sigma has gone from his first form in X1 to
his first form from X2," Luigi observes.
"Wait a second," Mario objects. "Shouldn't he go
to the second form from X1?"
"Yes he should," Luigi replies nodding his head.
"Then why doesn't he?" the older brother asks
"Dramatic effect," the younger relies casually
"What?" Mario asks, now confused.
"Save the big forms for last of course," Luigi states
as if it was the most obvious thing in the world (it makes sense
you know).
Mario's reply is cut off as Sigma extends claws from his hands in
a manner not unlike Wolverine of X-Men.
"Now you die brain!" he yells and charges again.
Once again the guns begin tracking and firing at the crazed Reploid
but this time he is much more difficult to hit. All they manage
to do is blow holes in the floor and walls (specially put in for
battles involving Mega Man X characters since it allows them to
jump off walls and limit the collateral damage) as Sigma either
deflects or wall jumps to avoid them. The barrage is still too intense
for him to get in and out cleanly so he turns his attention to the
cannons.
Sigma slashes them and then quickly backs away before they can get
a lock on him and manages to get a few of them offline. Finally,
his patience pays off and he finds an opening and slashes at the
glass jar containing Mother Brain. It withstands the initial hits
but soon it shatters, leaving the
evil genius exposed. Sigma gets one slash on the brain when two
turrets pop out of the life support system and blast him.
This really ticks off the Maverick but now he doesn't need to get
close to hurt Mother Brain. He build up some energy then launches
several homing purple spheres at his opponent. All them connect
on their target (what, you expected her to try and dodge it) and
an alien scream of pain can be heard.
"How does the pain feel?" Sigma taunted and then charged
up and sent a purple energy wall at her.
This, combined by other tactics was too much for Mother Brain. With
a large explosion, her life support system blew up and dropped Mother
Brain to the ground. Without her power, all the guns detonated as
well.
Confident that he had crippled his foe, Sigma retracted his claws
and stood over his opponent with a look of triumph.
"So, how do you like losi-" Sigma is interrupted as Mother
Brain begins to rise on four metal ball which Sigma realizes to
be a neck. She continues to rise until her full, horrible, powerful
body is reveled.
An eye opens on the brain and speaks, "How could I be losing
if I have not yet begun to fight?"
Then Mother Brain shoots out ten energy rings that send Sigma flying
backwards, exploding as he goes. Soon an explosion consumes his
body leaving only his head.
"Now who has lost?" Mother Brain says triumphantly.
However it was Mother Brain's turn to be surprised as Sigma's head
rose up into the head of a giant wolf-like robot that bears resemblance
to the Maverick's symbol.
"I certainly haven't lost yet," Sigma replied to
Mother Brain's rhetorical question, "have you?"
Awed by the appearance of the huge bosses, Luigi finally found his
voice, "This, this is incredible. Mother Brain has turned into
her final form and Sigma has became his second form from X1, Vanguard!"
"How many forms does Sigma have anyway?" Mario asks in
stunned amazement.
"At least ten," Luigi replies then thinks about it for
a second. "Make that thirteen."
Mario doesn't get a chance to reply because Sigma and Mother Brain
begin fighting again.
Mother Brain starts out by firing off some ring beams off at Sigma.
These cause minimal damage to him and he laughs at the effect, "Is
that the best you can do?"
He then fires twin lightning beams from his hands at his opponent.
The attack hits her squarely in the body and knocks her backward
but cause her no damage since her weakspot is her head.
"I'm afraid not," she replies and then throws a
fire bomb while launching more rings at Sigma. Unlike the previous
attacks, these do more damage as the bomb explodes, spreading fire
all over Sigma.
"How dare you!" Sigma exclaims intense hatred radiated
from his eyes (usually reserved for X and Zero). "Why don't
you try some of your own power."
He then fires flames from Vanguard's mouth but it had the same problem
as last time. Namely he hit the non-vulnerable areas and he knew
it.
"Looks like Sigma is having problems damaging Mother Brain,"
Mario observed.
"That's right," Luigi agreed, "and I think his problem
is most of
Vanguard's attacks are made to hit helpless small targets on the
ground, specifically Mega Man X."
"And Mother Brains weak spot is way above that target area,"
the elder plumber continued.
"Just like how in X1 if you got on its hands most of its attack
were rendered useless," Luigi then shook his head. "Sigma's
going to have to change forms in order to win."
Sigma himself had also arrived at that conclusion especially since
he was coming very close to the death of this body. His Neo Sigma
form was similarly useless since it also was made strictly to fight
X. Which only left one choice and the funny thing was that he almost
didn't bring it because of its size and the fact he thought it was
unnecessary for this fight. Vile had talked him into bringing it
because he pointed out that he thought it had been unnecessary with
X and well, the rest was history. Sigma then smiled, he'd have to
thank Vile later.
A few seconds later, Sigma exploded in a fiery flash causing the
lights to go off.
Seeing no trace of Sigma (as hard as it was to see in the blackness)
Mario gathered in his breath for the final announcement, "Well
it looks like the light are out and the fight is done. The winner
of tonight's deathmatch
is..."
"Not decided yet!" a booming voice interrupted.
Two large yellow eyes appeared in the darkness. "I will
admit that you are a worthy opponent and made it farther then I
ever expected you too. But now you will fall before my ultimate
battle body."
The lights then turn back on slowly reveling a huge Reploid with
Sigma's head where the robot's head would be. The disproportion
between Sigma's head and the rest of the body almost seemed comical,
but the battle body itself was nothing to laugh at. It was slightly
taller then Mother Brain with several missile racks, mine dispensers,
and twin energy draining cannons. The yellow light come from the
chest where it looked like there was another head. Mario and Luigi
don't announce it but everybody knows who it is: Kaiser Sigma.
The entire audience was is awe, except for Vile who is triumphantly
laughing and Ridley and Kraid who are cursing and swearing very
loudly.
Then Sigma breaks the silence with a deafening shout, "FEEL
MY WRAITH!!!"
After yelling that he launched about a dozen missiles at Mother
Brain's head. Unlike the previous bodies attacks these found their
mark and Mother Brain's head was whipped back hard by the force
of the explosion. He then rose up into air (amazing, considering
his size) with his feet jets and hovered right above his stunned
foe. Mother Brain was barely able to avoid being crushed as Sigma
lets himself fall. More missiles and a few mines are launched at
the giant monster. This time she was ready with several powerful
fire attacks that blow up the incoming explosives and hits the giant
Reploid. The attack barely phases him and he laughs and fires off
one
of his energy draining cannons. The attack connected and Mother
Brain felt a pain not unlike that she felt while being drained by
the Metriod larva.
"It appears that Mother Brain can't damage Sigma with those
attacks," Mario noted as the beam powered down leaving Mother
Brain severely weakened.
"That's not surprising," Luigi pointed out, "only
fully powered X-Buster shot did real damage to him it X3."
Sigma grinned maniacally, there's was no way he could loose now,
he thought. He then launched more missiles at Mother Brain but she
wasn't paying attention. The gant monster was building up energy
in her head for one more attack, the one that almost killed Samus
before.
Right before the missiles are about to hit her she unleashes the
energy. Like the other attack this one blows of the missiles but
when it hit Sigma it knocked him violently backwards and causing
lots of damage. Sigma was stunned, he had no idea his foe had that
powerful of an attack and now she was charging it again. Desperately
fired more missiles at her but they merely stunned her slightly
and, more importantly, didn't make her lose the charge. Again she
fired the beam and Sigma tried to block it with one arm but is only
partially successful as some of the energy goes around. Sigma then
turns both of his energy draining cannons and hopes he'll kill Mother
Brain before she can use the attack again.
Mother Brain begins to charge up despite the cannons drain on her.
Sigma the then turns them up as high as he can and simultaneously
launches all the missiles he can at once. Just before she is able
to fire, the drain takes its toll and her body explodes. The brain
that is the most evil genius in the galaxy falls to the floor and
slowly turns to dust.
There was silence for a few seconds before Sigma shouted triumphantly,
"Ha, Ha, Ha. Once again I prove that I am invincible!"
"I can think of two Reploids that would disagree with that
statement," Luigi mumbled with Mario nodding his head. Neither
of them noticed the countdown that appeared on the display panel
in front of them. Others in the stadium did notice that Kraid, Ridley,
and all the other Metriod characters made a very quick escape as
soon as Mother Brain died. Then most of the others in the stadium
had the benefit of a flash of insight by remembering how Metriod
games usually end and leave just as quickly. Those who didn't realize
it notice that the majority are leaving and decide it most likely
it's a little more concerning then the fight being over and follow
their exit. Soon, only Sigma and the Mario brothers are left in
the arena and they all are confused. At this point Mario notices
the timer and how it has gone from 3:00:00 to 1:04:58.
"Uh Luigi," he asks nervously and pointing at the timer,
"what's that?"
"A timer," Luigi replies, as nervous as his brother at
this point.
"I could see that," Mario said a little annoyed then the
fear came back.
"But what's it to."
"If memory serves me correct," Luigi replies while thinking,
"most Metroid games tend to end with a countdown where Samus
must escape before a life threatening explosion occurs."
"Really?" Mario says and they both look at the counter.
It now shows 0:13:32 left.
"You don't think..." Mario doesn't finish that question
as they change from their plumbers caps to corresponding colored
hard hats and ducked under the console. As the final seconds tick
down Sigma still doesn't know what's happening. He finds out soon
enough.
When the timer hit 0:00:00 a huge explosion occurred directly under
Sigma.
It had the force of several nuclear bomb and it expanded, consuming
the entire stadium. Out in the distance from it, you could see the
large rising mushroom cloud rising from where the stadium was.
As the secondary explosions subside and the dust begins to settle,
Mario and Luigi slowly peer over the ruined control console and
look for any sign of Sigma. All they see though is a desolate wasteland
that used to be the stadium and a couple pieces of scrap metal.
"Is it over?" Mario quietly asks his brother, half-expecting
something else to blow up at this point.
"Yeah I think it's over," Luigi replies softly.
They then pull themselves together and get up and sit in the blackened
remains of their chairs.
"Well," Mario says in his best announcer voice (even though
there's no one to announce to), "it appears the fight has ended."
"That's right," Luigi continued, also trying to sound
as if the recent apocalypse had not just happened, "and the
winner is...Sigma!"
Mario turns to his brother and asks, "Why does he win?"
"Because he killed Mother Brain first," Luigi stated plainly.
"Oh," Mario replied stunned once again. Gathering himself
again though, he started talking, "Well, he may not be around
to accept it but
congratulations Sigma!"
"I can't believe I just said that," Mario grumbles under
his breath after saying that.
"So ends tonight's deathmatch," Luigi says and then again
surveys the devastation. "Let's hope we can get the arena rebuilt
for next week."
"No kidding," Mario agrees.
"So Good Night..." Mario starts.
"Good Fight!" Luigi finishes.
And so we leave them as they discuss how they'll explain to the
Nintendo Land webmasters exactly why the stadium is now slag. Good
bye.
