BS Super Mario Bros

In 1995 Nintendo released a add on for the SNES called the Satellaview a.k.a. the "BS-X"
in Japan, where people could download news, info and even demos of new Nintendo games from a special satellite. One of the games for this system is a small demoversion of Super Mario Bros 3, with enhanced graphics just like in Super Mario All-stars. I doubt that the game is a promotion for Super Mario All-stars because Super Mario All-stars was released in 1993 and the BS-X wasn't finished until around 1995.

When you start the game you are greeted by a poorly scanned picture, possibly from the Japanese Super Mario Bros 3 box cover (see picture above). You have to wait about a minute or so before you can start playing. We assume that this delay is because the game had to be downloaded from the satellite before you could play it.
A cloudy background with big green hills scrolls by and after a while the screen darkens a little and a picture showing Mario, Peach, Toad and another woman (Daisy maybe?) sitting by a table with microphones on it. Almost like they were producing some sort of radio show (see pictures to the left). Then the text "Next course world 4" appear and you are transported to the first world.

This map appears where Mario can walk around and visit the 3 courses available. The odd thing is that you can walk over "course icons" of courses that you haven't completed yet. Consequently, when you start out you can go straight to course 2 or 3, if you wish. All the courses are taken from the original so there is no new courses what so ever.
When you then complete a level you begin to get even more confused because the course icons on the map never disappear... This
way you can visit all the courses over and over again. When you have completed all the courses once the locked door on the map that blocks the way to the "money ship" disappears. You can now access this ship. After you have taken all the money lying around up there you are forced to fight two Boomerang Brothers in the cabin. If you defeat them you are awarded with some sort of power up. In this world a Tanooki suit. Let me also explain some other of the icons on the map:
 
 
 
The Mushroom House


Like the Mushroom houses in the original a friendly Mushroom citizen offers you to take the power up hidden inside on of the three treasure chests. The odd thing is that you can visit these Mushroom houses how many times you want. Just enter a course and push start to escape to the map. Now you can enter the Mushroom house once again to grab a power up... A miss by the programmers or a trick to make the game easier to complete? I don't know.

When you enter this icon a cute little child with a pink sweater with an big "N" on asks you some things in Japanese. After that you are awarded with eternal fire flower. Not really eternal, but once you have entered a fire flower icon you will be resurrected as Fire Mario instead of normal Mario every time you die.
 

 
 


After you have defeated the Boomerang Brothers at the money ship you expect that something will happen, that the road to the castle will be open or something. But no, nothing happens... You try to play though the courses over and over... Then after while, you notice that in the status bar a special clock is ticking. If you wait until that time runs out another scrolling background appears. This time from inside one of Bowser's castles. A picture showing Mario on top of a cliff and one of Bowser's Doomships appear. The text "Vs. Bun Bun" appears and you are transported to a fortress where you in the end battle Boom Boom (Bun Bun). When defeated he leaves a magic rod and the world is complete.

Now the bonus game that could be found as an icon on the map in the original game appears. You are supposed to match 3 parts of the same power up to gain extra-lives. This time you can play the bonus game over and over again, though. You can continue playing the bonus game until the time (the time counter was reseted once you entered the Fortress) runs out.When that happens another scrolling background appears. This one is from deep inside a cave. After a while another picture appears showing Mario and Bowser. The text tells us that we are off to "World 4".
Note: The world you just completed is called "World 4" and the World they announce as the next level is also called "World 4". The curses in the first world is taken from World 4 in the original game and so is the courses in this next world.

World 2
 

Three more courses taken from world 4 in the original can be played here. On the money ship you once again battle 2 Boomerang Brothers and as a reward you receive a Hammer suit. When the time runs out you see a picture showing Mario listening as Toad I think it is trying to say something to Mario (See picture to the left). You will now be transported to Iggy's Doomship and after a battle with Iggy himself you receive the magic rod and the World is finished.

Now its of to World 5

 

World 3
 

This is the last world and is based on the second half of world 5 from the original game. The courses are the same as in the original as well. When the time has run out a picture of Mario going up against Bowser is shown, with the text "Vs. Kuppa". You are transported to Bowser's castle (the same castle as in Super Mario Bros 3) and gets a chance to battle Bowser himself. The dning is the same as in the original so I won't go into how it goes. Play Super Mario Bros 3 yourselves if oyu want to know...
