Wrecking Crew '98

Remember the old NES game Wrecking Crew?
In this SNES version Mario is back, but this time in a Tetris style puzzle game instead of a platform game. The first thing that meets you player when you start the game is a golden Nintendo logo with a nice ripple effect. After that you can choose if you want to play the original Wrecking Crew or the new puzzle version, Wrecking Crew '98.

If you now choose to play Wrecking Crew '98 the screen blanks and a huge purple brick wall appears. The screen starts rumble and big cracks begins to appear in the brick-wall. After a while the wall breaks and you see Mario with a big sledgehammer in his hands (se pictures).

Since the whole game is in Japanese I can only guess what game modes there is but there is a 1 player mode and one 2 player vs. mode and one tutorial mode for the beginners.

Mario meets a Koopa Troopa

The Story...

It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining and Mario is out walking in the woods. Suddenly Mario sees a huge tower right in the middle of nowhere. In the shadow of the big tower no flowers or grass can live. Therefor Mario decides to simply destroy the tower.

On the sign at the side of the tower there is a picture of Bowser and a message in Japanese.

Mario goes home to his house and takes out his big sledgehammer and heads for the tower to demolish it.
Inside the tower, Mario meets his first enemy which he must "duel" with. In the first level his enemy is a big purple characters, later on you'll meet other classic Mario enemies like the Koopa Troopas, among others.

Note the Koopa sign on the big Castle on the mountain. Bowser's hideout?

  The puzzle game

Both you and your competitor starts of with an equal number of multicolored blocks.
Your task is to either get rid of all your own blocks or push up your competitors piles of blocks above the red and yellow striped line at the top of the screen.

You do this by destroying blocks with your sledge so that similar looking blocks falls into rows either vertically or horizontally. The higher number of blocks in a row the better.

You can also create "chains". A chain is when you create a chain reaction of blocks forming rows. When one row of blocks disappears another row of blocks can be formed
making a chain reaction. Even in this case, the bigger the chain reactions is the better!

If you reckon that you have to few blocks on your screen you can always press akey to let a new row of blocks fall down from the top of the screen.

There are 4 different blocks each with their own color and icons on the side:

These blocks will extend one of your competitor's piles of blocks with a number of blocks. If you are careless one of these combination from your competitors can easily make you lose, immediately.

These are the best blocks of them all. When you get a combination of this type of blocks a number of black blocks affls down on your competitors screen.
These black blocks can't be destroyed with a sledge. Consequenlty you must use bombs, that you get once in a while when other appears other blocks.

These block send over one or many
"monsters" onto your competitor's screen. These will try to hinder him the best they can.

These blocks will transform some of your competitors blocks into gray brickswalls. These brickwalls must be hit one time to transform into a normal block.

the Wrecking Crew '98 cart

This is one of the few Satella System games (the only?) that were released on cart. Wrekcing Crew '98 was released in Cart but only in Japan. Most of the Satella System games is sort of beta versions of games. I guess Nintendo used the Satella System to test their new game ideas before deciding whether to release them or not. Although Wrecking Crew '98 was released on cart I personaly feel that the game is lacking in its design...

This is most noticeable when you play against a friend or a computer competitor that is about as skilled as you are.
When this happens it can take a very long time before any of you wins. This can be very
boring and after a while, get frustrating.
