Haunted Castle

Simon Belmont (?) with his (extremely long) whip!

In 1988 Konami released their Arcade game Haunted Castle. Obviously this game became a big success because shortly after they released a version for Nintendo's popular consoles NES (Famicom).

The game starts out with a very cool brownish picture of Simon Belmont (I hope it is at least) about to swing his long whip. Dracula's face is seen in the background and slowly the words 'Haunted Castle' fades into view.
You put your money into the greedy machine and the next thing you see is Simon dressed in neat white smoking walking out of church with his newly wedded wife. But Dracula appears over the hills and swoops down to kidnap the hero's wife. He disappears with Simon's wife into the air and the game is about to begin...

Dracula takes Simon's wife...

level 1

The first level.

Simon looks a bit larger on the arcade than he does in the NES game and the largeness of his sprite really makes this game a bit harder to control than the NES version. I can't complain about the graphics, though, although Super Castlevania for the SNES is a teeny weeny better looking. You start off facing the classic skeletons who lob bones at you (not very dangerous...). In the background you see a town. Soon the scenery changes when you approach a graveyard (zombies included ^_^) and later a dark woods where tree monster grasp out at you.

Fire and bats...

Simon caught in the flames...

You continue, and after avoiding some flying blocks (! ^_^) you are faced with the medusa boss. A boss who has appeared in many Castlevania games later on.

Level 2

The second course is a lot harder. Through the mist you can see a castle (possibly Dracula's) and skeletons rise again after being defeated by you. There is one nice surprise, though, a handy mace which takes double the damage on all enemies.

A new weapon

The worms!

Soon you go below ground and is attacked by the Geldmen, also well known by Castlevania fans, who jump out of the water when you least expect it. You get to dodge some rocks and some other 'oldies' appear... The fire ball spitting worms... (se picture above). The game continues on about 4-5 courses more, but those haven't been uncovered yet, but if we ever reach Dracula we'll be sure to add a picture off him! ^_^
