Luigi and Mario from Mario Bros ![]() "Luigi data" from Super Smash Bros ![]() Luigi from the "Lost Levels" manual |
Luigi
has always been standing in the shadows letting Mario take all the honor,
but he seams to like it. Introduction Luigi was more frequently seen in the first Mario games when the Mario games were still named Super Mario Bros. Later that little word "Bros" disappeared and the games were just named Super Mario World or Super Mario 64 or something like that. Until recently Luigi hadn´t got himself as much as a little minor role in any of the latest Mario games. Until recently Mario Bros, SMB 1, 2 (both the European and Japanese game), 3, SMW, Mario is Missing, Mario´s Time Machine, Wrecking Crew, Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 are the only games where the player gets a chance of controlling Luigi. The future looks brighter for Luigi now, after his appearance in both Mario's Party, Mario Golf and Super Smash Bros (as a secret character). Even though none of these 3 games is actually produced by Nintendo it's still a step in the right direction. Shigeru must have noticed that there are people who love the green plumber as well, because in a very early test version of what hopefully will turn out to be the sequel to Super Mario 64 both Mario and Luigi is planned to appear. Even though that he didn´t join up with Mario in Super Mario 64 he is always there for him when he needs him, like when Mario was kidnapped by Bowser in Mario is Missing Luigi didn´t doubt a minute about rescuing him. Another example is Mario and Wario were he patiently waits at the end of each level to free Mario (or Peach or Yoshi) from the object that Wario have put over their heads. He's brightest time must be Super Mario Bros 2 (western version) where he together with Peach was the best choice of character. Way better than both Toad and Mario. During a interview, Shigeru Miyamoto got the question why Luigi hadn't got any recent role in any Mario game (except Mario Kart 64) and he answered that Luigi was in Super Mario 64 about half a year before completion and that they also planned to have him pop up in Super Mario RPG, but he "disappeared on the way." Shigeru finished with the words: I'm sure that in the games to come we will meet this whimsical character again. So let's keep our fingers crossed that Luigi will appear at least in the next big Mario adventure. Either Super Mario RPG 2 or the sequel to Super Mario 64. Personally I think that the reason why Luigi hasn't been in the last adventures is that after SML1 Luigi met Princess Daisy and they fell in love. Now Luigi just hasn't got time to be out fighting Bowser when he must be home with his dear Daisy! They didn't even bother redesigning him... In both Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and Super Mario World Luigi looked exactly the same as Mario. Every true Luigi fan knows that he is _not_ as fat as his older brother, though. Why didn't they change the sprite then? Either they didn't bother changing the sprites or they did it to save memory or to simplify the game. It was probably easier to have the same sprite for both Mario and Luigi and just change palette instead. Thanks to Luigi's fan site for some of the pictures shown on this page. |
