Nintendo of Japan

The R&D Teams
Yamauchi divided his staff into 4 different R&Dteams, standing for Research & Development, he made them compete against each other to see who could produce the best games. Hiroshi never told the teams what to create so they had free hands to create what every they wanted!
[From the beginning there was only one R&D team lead by Gunpei Yokoi.]

The R&D1 Team
The R&D1 team lead by Gunpei Yokoi has for example designed the Game Boy and the Virtual Boy. Metroid (the first game with a female hero?!) and Kid Icarus has alos come from the R&D1 team. They were described as "a band of samurai" operating in silence with less recognition that the other teams.

The man behind the Game Boy, Virtual Boy, and the Game&Watch games.

The R&D2 Team
This Team was lead by Masayuki Uemura and has been behind much of the hardware. Uemura's team was often assigned all sorts of top secret projects. 65 people worked under Uemura.

The R&D3 Team
This 20 people team lead by Takeda Genyo was responsible for much of the technical stuffs like the bank switching and later the many MMC chips just to mention some things. The team has also done games like Star Tropicsetc. Takeda's team nicknamed "Rumania" had a motto "There are no limitations, no boundaries since were're on our own there's nothing we can't do when you start with nothing you can do everything"! This team is isolated from the other teams and can be described as a band of "otakus" (computer hackers and nerds).
