It may look like just a graphically spruced up re-make of the classic arcade
game, but it's much more than that. After breezing through the first levels,
who are identical to the arcade original's levels, DK94 suddenly becomes a
whole new game in it's own right, and a genial one at that.
The aim in most levels, is to locate a large key, and carry this key to the
exit door. Sounds simple, but it's not. Enemys, shifting platforms and lots
of utterly eeeeeevil puzzles stand between you and the next level. Some more
action-oriented levels, as well as the hectic boss stages liven things up,
but for the most part, this is a test
of your nerves and your grey matter.

It's simply amazing how rich the ideas used in this game are. Mario has loads of acrobatic moves at his disposal (some of wich were re-used in SM64!), which are activated through a very clever control system, the levels are packed with some briliantly original ideas, and the puzzles can only leave one marvelling at Nintendo's unmatched talent for game design. Eiter they truly are supreme beings, or they have their own personal Satan to come up with these brilliantly nasty levels. This game deserves the title of "best 2-D platform game ever" just as much as Yoshi's Island (to which it has often been unofficially accredited) does.
You'll scream, you'll cry, you'll angrily swith off the machine and solemnly
vow to never touch that evil game again, only to find yourself attempting to
beat that one stubborn level one more time, because this time, you think you
might just have found the right way to do it. That's how a good game should
work. Miyamoto couldn't have found a better way to honor his very first game
than this superb re-make-which-is-not-just-a-re-make. If you still need proof
that Nintendo are superior even to the Gods themselves (yes, I know, I'm going
over the top here....sorry), play this game. But be warned, this game is seriously
brilliant.- Toasty 94%
