As Link exited Clock Town, he started counting his paces, but he soon realized that he reached one hundred steps well before the swamp even began, and thus concluded that the four gods, provided they did exist, must be extremely tall, and therefore have longer strides than himself. Link continued walking towards the swamp, forgetting about the one hundred paces. He soon reached the swamp and climbed up a ladder into a small hut on stilts. Inside, he heard about an old lady which gave tours of the swamp, but that the lady was mysteriously missing. A little disappointed, Link decided to go search for the lady further in the swamp. After swimming through the murky swamp, he found another small hut raised from the swamp, but what intrigued him more was a small collective of monkeys who were frantically running around in the distance. Link rushed over to investigate, and upon his arrival, the monkeys beckoned him to follow them. Link, not having a better idea, followed the monkeys through a maze-like forest which made Link think of his days in the Lost Woods in Hyrule. Just as Link started to reminisce, he happened upon what seemed to be the remainder of the troupe of monkeys surrounded by old hag which reminded him of Koume and Kotake from Hyrule. Link unsheathed his sword in preparation to fight, but the old witch pleaded with him for help instead of attacking him. She instructed him to visit her sister back aways towards the swamp for a potion. Link was still a little suspicious, thinking he was being set up for a trap, but away he went to do the witch's bidding. The witch apparently lived in the second small hut he had passed. He climbed the ladder and found the witch's sister. The witch greeted the boy cheerfully, but Link put all introductions aside and quickly told the witch of her sister in the forest. The other witch gasped in fear and quickly gave Link a bottled red potion to take to her sister. Link took the bottle politely and rushed back into the woods, returning to the place where the first witch lay injured on the ground. Link carefully fed the potion into the witch, and in no time at all, she perked up and was able to fly away upon her broomstick. Before she left, she invited Link to a free tour of the swamp back at her hut. Link sighed as he ran out towards the swamp. As he did, one of the monkey's tagged along side him, telling him that one of his own was trapped within the Deku Palace on the other side of the swamp. Link looked in the direction the monkey indicated and saw it inhabited by a large octorok. After thinking for a moment, Link decidedly traveled back to the first hut he had happened upon and found the witch behind her booth. The witch, grateful for Link's help in the forest, offered to take him to the other side of the swamp free of charge, which Link happily accepted. Link found that the boat's sharp point was able to pierce the octorok into submission, and as they crossed the barrier into the other side of the swamp, the water turned a deep purple. Link bent down to look at it, but the witch quickly warned him not to touch it, as it was filled with poison. The boat stopped at a long dock made of wooden planks, and the witch told him that she would wait for him while he explored the swamp. Link crossed the planks and found himself at the Deku Palace. The first thing he noticed were the two Deku guards at the entrance. Link quickly put on his Deku Mask, becoming a Deku, and passed by. In the inner sanctums of the palace, Link found the monkey inside a cave. Link looked for a way to gain entrance to the cave, but after fully exploring the palace and nearly getting caught several times, he realized the only way to the monkey was from outside. Link crossed the poisoned swamp via the lily pads to the western side of the garden. Link climbed a vine and then proceded to use Deku Flowers to make death-defying leaps across pits and onto moving platforms. With a little bit of skill, and a large helping of luck, Link managed to make it around the upper tiers of the Deku Palace to where the Monkey was. The monkey was able to tell Link of the kidnapping of the Deku Princess and was able to teach Link a sacred Deku song that would help him find the source of the problem: Woodfall. Once done, Link left for the Woodfall, using a shortcut only accessible to the Deku across tall heights. After several jumps, Link made it to Woodfall. He continued his way across the swamp and eventually came across a small platform with a Deku symbol and an owl statue. Link struck the statue with his sword, as the owl had instructed, and informed Link that he could return here by playing a magical melody on his ocarina. Link then played the song the monkey had taught him, and out of nowhere, a temple arose from the depths of the swamp. Linked realized the time, and decided that it was best to have three entire days to get through the temple. Link warped back in time, then flew back to the temple, and then he entered. The temple was filled with many creatures, ranging from bugs to malformed plant life, much the typical life that would be found in a swamp area. The temple was dimly lit, and Link would ocassionally find himself lighting a Deku stick against a brazier for light. Link always advanced carefully as he went, collecting stray faeries similar to the one in Clock Town, opening treasure chests, and destroying enemies. As he progressed, he found himself doing circles, entering the same room from many different points. After a long journey through the temple, he finally found the source of the evil, a giant named Odolwa. Odolwa had a giant sword, and would strike Link with a fierce blow whenever he came close. Link attempted to do so several times before finding it futile. After several failed attempts, Link took out his bow that he obtained in the temple and fired an arrow up at giant. The arrow struck true, and the giant seemed to lose his footing, though he was able to stay upright. Link saw his chance. He ran in and sliced the giant with his sword. The giant leapt in pain, but he wasn't through yet. He sent a swarm of bats to chase Link, and started encircling the Hero in rings of fire, but Link's trusty bow and sword were still able to find their target, and after several attacks, Link had defeated the enemy. As the boss fell to the ground, Link felt himself uplifted to a place in the sky, were he met one of the four gods. The god thanked Link from freeing him from the giant, and tried to talk to him in the form of a song. Link didn't understand the words, but he gathered the feeling of it. He memorized the song and bid the god on his way. It was then he remembered about the Deku Princess. Link found her in the back room and quickly escorted her back to the Deku Palace, where much relief was had over the safe return of the princess. The monkey Link had talked to in the past three-day cycle was let go, and peace returned to the southern sector of Termina. Now that Link had verified the gods' existence, Link warped back in time again and headed towards the northern mountains to find the second diety. The progress was slow going in the mountains, as the mountains had encountered a snowstorm as of late, and the snow chilled Link to the bone, though it didn't keep the enemies away surprisingly. White snow wolfos and small boes had inhabited the area. To make matters worse, snowdrifts blocked the path at some points, making the travelling much more difficult, and Link had to use bombs to clear the drifts away. Link eventually journeyed towards a villiage in the far north, apparently inhabited by Gorons. Link was surprised to see that Gorons lived in Termina as well, but quickly realized that something was amiss. Gorons normally preferred warmer climates, and these Gorons were literally freezing to death and dying of starvation. Even worse, the Goron elder of the clan was missing in the wilderness. Link realized that the Skullkid with the mask had done his handicraft here as well as in the Southern Swamp. Another surprise that struck Link was the appearance of an owl he had remembered seeing constantly in Hyrule. The owl flew across a great chasm, and Link noticed several of his feathers floated in the air as if they were being held up by some mysterious force. It then dawned upon Link; there were hidden platforms within the pit. Link jumped over the pit onto where he believed a platform was, and to his satisfaction, found the stable ground. He started jumping cautiously yet quickly over the invisible platforms, not wanting to fall, but not wanting the feather trail to float away. The invisible ground beneath him made him nervous, but after several minutes, he found his way to the other side, where he obtained the Lens of Truth. Returning to the other side of the crevasse was easier with the aid of the Lens, but he then saw something unexpected, the a Goron ghost. Link looked up at the Goron awkwardly, and the Goron, realizing that Link could see him, told him to follow him. Link was a little confused by this, but nevertheless he ran off, following the ghost with the Lens of Truth. Over several snowy drifts Link wandered, following the ghost, and eventually he was led over an icy river and up a cliff, whose hand rails were only visible with the Lens he had just obtained. At the top of the cliff, Link saw what appeared to be the gravesite of the ghost, and so, playing the song that healed the Deku spirit back in the Clock Tower, the Goron spirit was freed and transformed into a Goron Mask. Link put on the mask, and as expected, his body changed shape into that of a Goron. It was then when he remembered about the Goron elder. Link quickly climbed down the cliff and rushed off to find the elder. With the Goron mask on, Link learned to roll at fast speeds. Link would have spent much longer looking for the elder had it not been for the fact that he fell off of a land bridge and into a pile of snow, revealing the shivering elder within. The elder thanked Goron Link for his help, and in return started to teach him a song, a lullaby of sorts. However, as the elder played, he slowly realized that he couldn't remember the entirety of the song. Link, however, quickly figured out that playing what he knew of the lullaby for a crying baby in the village might help him figure out the rest of the song. Sure enough, his idea worked, and Link was able to learn the rest of the song from the child, who fell asleep as soon as the song was played. With all of this, he asked the Gorons of any possible temple in the vacinity, and they all directed him to Snowfall. Link started off for Snowfall, but quickly realized the path was extremely dangerous, full of pitfalls, hazards, and avalanches. Link retained his Goron form and flew over the gaps and dodged the traps as best he could, and after an exhilarating romp through the valley, he happened upon Snowfall, where he found one more owl statue. Here, he travelled back in time and warped back using the Ocarina. Upon his return, he played the song once again, and then a Goron, who had been invisible up until that point, keeled over into the valley below. Link then rushed across the narrow bridge and then upwards to enter the Snowfall Temple. Snowfall was five floors high and one basement deep and was the unique paradox of fire and ice. The lower levels of the dungeon had lava breaking through the floor of the ground, cracking it as it spread, while the upper floors were covered with snow, much as it had been outside. In fact, many of the doors were covered with walls of solid ice. Link tried to steer clear of these walls of ice as much as possible, for going near them would freeze him at the slightest touch. As Link explored, he eventually came across the Fire Arrow, which Link found very helpful in freeing up the restrictive ice. It was only then when Link was able to explore the upper floors of the dungeon using a back way up to find the boss' lair. Link entered the locked room and found himself within a small square room with what appeared to be a mechanical bull trapped in ice. Link swallowed and shot one final arrow into the ice, and the machine, named Goht, broke free, crashing into the wall opposite him, revealing a circular-like track. Link quickly donned the Goron Mask for speed and attempted to catch up to the bull. Doing so, however, was extremely dangerous, as stalagtites formerly on the cavernous ceiling broke away due to the bull's rampage. As Link caught up to Goht, he aimed for his legs, trying to break them and bring him to a halt. Whenever Link did manage to make a strike against the machine, Goht would throw a bolt of lightning back, which Link found relatively easy to dodge compared to the falling stalagtites. Eventually, Link scored a final hit upon the beast, which sent Goht careening into a wall, thus disabling himself. Like the previous time, a circle of light appeared around the hero and rose him up where he met the second deity of the quartet. There were no songs to be learned this time, however; just a simple attempt at communication. As the god dismissed Link, Link slowly saw the landscape around him change from winter into spring, and the climate of the Goron home return to normal temperatures. Satisfied, Link went about to find the third diety. Link, however, met frustration, as both the east and west passages were blocked off by gates. Link cursed to himself, wishing that his horse was still present. He returned to Clock Town and inquired about possible grazing places for horses in Termina. Soon enough, Link found out about Milk Road, but there was just one small problem. The road to the ranch beyond it was blocked off by a boulder, and nothing could get through. Link went to investigate the problem, but realized that nothing of his own could crack through. Link returned to the Goron village, remembering that the Hyrulian Gorons were experts in pyrotechnics. Easily enough, Link found a Goron willing to sell him a powder keg. Link payed the Goron and brought the keg to the boulder, blowing it up. After doing so, he found his way to Romani Ranch, a vast field with only a handful of buildings. Sure enough, however, Link found his own horse on the ranch, and inquired the owners of the ranch about it. The owners, a woman named Cremia and her sister Romani, told Link that the horse wandered in from the field just a few days ago. Link thought about telling them it was his horse, but Romani, out of earshot from Cremia, told him of some ghosts who would come by that night to steal the farm animals. Link disbelieved this story at first, but sensitive to Romani, offered to exchange Epona for his help in dealing with the ghosts. Romani quickly accepted and convinced Cremia to give Link his horse back. Link hung around the ranch for the remainder of the day until nightfall. He met Romani in the barn, and they agreed to split up: Romani would guard the inside and Link guarded the outside. No more than a moment after stepping outside, the ghosts appeared, and Link realized Romani had been telling the truth all along. Link drew his bow and started firing at the approaching ghosts, always forcing them back. This continued all the way through the night, and Link almost grew exhausted from it. One ghost managed to reach the barn, but the sunlight had just come over the horizon, and the ghost disappeared without a trace. Romani left the barn and thanked Link for his kindness. As promised, she returned Epona to him, and with that, Link left the ranch back into the central area of Termina, restoring time once again to the first day as he left. Now with his horse, Link went off to the west towards the Great Bay, as there he found Zoras in the midst of panic. In particular, he found a Zora by the name of Mikau who was on the verge of death. Link slowly helped him ashore, and when Mikau finally hit the beach, he told Link that his time had drawn near and that he would like it if Link could find some way to rest his soul. Link once again played the Song of Healing, and Mikau disappeared within a flash of light, leaving only a mask, a Zora mask behind. Link donned the mask and immediately went seeking for the Zora home. After talking to some of the other Zoras in the area, he eventually was told that the Zoras lived in a place under the sea in the south sector of the Great Bay. Link dove and swam off, entering the main entrance, which gave Link the creepy feeling that he was entering a fish's mouth. His thoughts shivered as they returned to the Hyrulian Zora's Jabu-Jabu, but he quickly refocused his mind and started investigating the area, guessing that, like the other areas, something was amiss too. For the reports of the Zoran people, it sounded as if a strange being matching the Skullkid's description had stolen seven Zora eggs layed by Lulu, and it was absolutely essential to find the eggs as soon as possible for them to hatch properly. After touring the area once again, he noticed a large fortress with what appeared to be pirates within. As Link looked up the rusted metal walls, he determined that the pirates might have taken the eggs from the Skullkid, as it appeared as if the Skullkid with the mask viewed them favorably. Link donned his Zora mask once again and slowly snuck his way through a hole in the pipe network underneath the fort, and after a long maze-like detour, eventually gained access. The inside of the fort was even more dangerous than the outside, as there were many more guards on patrol on the inside. Link snuck behind crates, around corners, and up ladders to avoid detection from the guards around him. He eventually found his way up to a watch tower, and from there he found a door leading to a secret vantage point of the main hall. Here, Link learned that the pirates had collected four of the seven eggs, but they were desperately looking for the missing three. Link, feeling the need to teach the evil women a lesson, shot an arrow through a beehive in the room, and the bees within it chased all of the guards out of the room. Link then snuck out and then hopped down to the entrance of the main room. Lo and behold, within that room there was one of the seven Zora eggs within a large aquarium. Link climbed up on top of the aquarium's ledge and dove down as a Zora, scooping the egg within one of his collection of bottles. Link then searched for the other three. The going was difficult, though, as an elite pirate of the squad guaraded each of the other three aquariums in the fortress. However, Link's courage and steady sword found their mark every time, and soon enough, Link had four eggs in his possession. Link started to go back to the Zora Hall to return the eggs, but a hut in the middle of the bay caught his attention. A researcher within saw the eggs within Link's bottles and explained to him that the Zora eggs were to be hatched in his laboratory. Link was unsure of this, and so he left momentarily to verify this fact with one of the other Zoras. Finding the story true, Link dumped the eggs into the aquarium at the research facility and went off for the final three. Finding these three, however, was easier said than done. The only rumors of them were that they were within Pinnacle Rock further out in the bay. However, the water was so murky that the Zoras couldn't traverse this on their own. Link went ashore for a while, trying to come up with a way to get to Pinnacle Rock, and eventually he found a collector of rare items who owned a seahorse. Link gained a strange feeling about the seahorse, and hearing news that a golden fish could pass through the murky depths, Link figured this was the answer. Link had to do a special favor for the owner of the seahorse, but eventually got the seahorse, who then led him down into Pinnacle Rock. Eels inhabited the briny depths, but Link, using the boomerang fins and electric current he had obtained as a Zora, managed to dispose of most of them. Within several of the tunnels once inhabited by the eels, Link found the remaining three Zora eggs. He quickly swam like a dolphin back to the researcher's lab and dumped them in the tank. It was then that the hatching ceremony took place, and in the wake of their hatching, the hatchlings sang a song, a song that would be useful to get to the third temple of Termina. Memorizing the song, Link figured he would be near gaining access to the temple, and so warped back in time again. Link then returned to the back side of Zora Hall, where he played the song. Link jumped unexpectantly when he realized that the island in front of him was no mere island, but a turtle. The turtle offered him a ride to the Great Bay Temple, which Link accepted. The Great Bay Temple was more an experiment in engineering than a dungeon to Link. The entire dungeon was filled with large pipes of flowing water, cranks, switches, turbines, and water inlets and outlets. Much to Link's dismay, he got a quick course in the art of plumbing as he tried to explore the temple. He noticed that many of the holdups in the pipeline were caused by cranks that needed to be switched on, and eventually Link found out how to reverse the direction of the inlets and outlets of the water. Through this nightmare of tubes, pipes, and the works, Link eventually came upon the monster guarding the third deity, a fish by the name of Gyorg. Gyorg apparently preferred to have his prey in his natural waters, where Link was easier to kill. He would bash the central column where Link stood, trying to knock him off. Link, surprised the first time, was thrown clear of the platform, and while frantically attempting to get dry, found himself in the jaws of the pirhana-like fish. Eventually escaping with many cuts, incisions, and bruises, Link managed back to the platform when an idea struck him. He donned the Zora Mask and sent his boomerang fins into the water after Gyorg. After missing twice, they found their target. Seeing this as his chance, Link flew down to the bottom of the pool where Gyorg lay wincing and shocked him with electricity. The battle continued on much as it had, Gyorg attempting new tricks such as flying over the column to knock Link in, but Link was ready for Gyorg, and eventually, he shocked the fish one final time to its death. After defeating the fish, Link found himself yet again face-to-face with the third of the four deities of Termina. The god he faced was much like the second one, only able to utter a handful of words and a mutual understanding before sending Link back into the planes of Termina, where Link, now encouraged and happily pleased yet amazed at his progress, went to find the final deity, warping back again to do so. The final diety was in the east, and Link called for his trusty horse to take him there. As he travelled, he noticed that the land slowly became more and more barren as he rode, apparently suffering from a decay from the Skullkid. Eventually Link reached a dead end, and as he looked up to the sky to find the morning sun, he realized that he wasn't as stuck as he had imagined himself to be. Link smiled as he realized that he would have to scale the cliff wall of the canyon to procede. Using his trusty hookshot, it would be no problem at all for him. As he reached the roof of the canyon, Link saw why the area had been in decay. A riverbed, formerly dried up, had been caused by a tragic drought in the weather, more work caused by the Skullkid. Link thought to himself, and he began to wonder if it was the Skullkid was truly evil or whether it still was the corruption caused by the Majora's Mask. Upon the plain on the canyon, Link discovered a well. He descended into the depths of the well, and within, he found frightening Gibdos. The Gibdos, however, offered him a deal though. Bring them the item they desired, or they would attack. Link slowly backed up and listened to their requests, one-by-one. Once he heard them, he would warp to the various locations of Termina, obtain the items they desired, and then returned to the well to offer his sacrement of peace. Once he gave them that which their heart desired, they disappeared, opening the way forward. Link went further and further into the well, eventually coming across a antique chest and a means of escape different from the entrance he had entered in. Within the chest came a magnificent Mirror Shield, different shaped that the one he had remembered having in Hyrule, but similar in function. Link climbed the ladder leading out, and he found himself mysteriously inside the walls of Ikana Castle. He had briefly seen this castle from the outside, but hadn't paid much attention to it at the time. We entered the castle, and was immediately surrounded with the ominous presence of darkness and death. The eeriness reminded Link of the Shadow Temple had had gotten through back in Hyrule, and that made him on the alert even more than normal. Eventually, while progressing through the castle, he found himself on the top of inner sanctom of the castle, but even more surprisingly was that there was a weak spot on the roof that had open once upon a time, then sealed over after the fact. Link lit one of his bombs and placed it on the weak ceiling. In no time at all, the ceiling cracked with the force of the bomb's explosion, and Link should see the light shining down into the central chamber. Now with this light, he could see much more clearly, and saw a symbol on the far wall. He took out his mirror shield and shone it against the symbol, and with a burst of magic, a section of the wall vanished, opening up the way forward. Passing through the opening in the wall, Link strode into the throne room, but was aghast to see three skeletons on the promenade, one of which sitting in the throne. The King Skeleton, as it turned out to be, looked upon the mortal Link and immediately ordered his two guards to attack. The skeleton guards jumped down off of the steps and charged at Link, their swords brandished. Link fought fiercely against the skeletons, but no matter how hard he tried, they just kept coming to life after being defeated, unlike the Stalfos in Hyrule. It was then that Link had a moment of inspiration. The temple surroundings were dark, and the sunroof within the central chamber had been sealed over. The skeletons must be weak against light. He looked high on the walls and found curtains draped over what appeared to be windows. Link lit an arrow with fire and torched the curtain, letting light in. He then fought the skeletons again, this time, when defeating them, shining light on them. To his surprise, the bodies of the skeletons dissolved immediately when the light touched them. Within an instant, the second guard was defeated. The King, surprised by the ingenuity of the boy, challenged Link himself, but soon afterwards fell victim to the light as well. The skeleton faded from view, but this time, the head of the skeleton remained. The King, admiting defeat, decided to teach Link a song, hoping that Link would be able to lift the curse set on Ikana and the castle by the Skullkid. Link took out his ocarina and put it to his lips, learning the song the King sung for him. This was the final key to getting to the fourth and final deity. Or so he thought... Link found his way to the Stone Tower as the King instructed, but the Stone Tower was actually a perfectly square crevasse dug within the face of the mountain with sheer edges. Link found several switches on the ground, and all of which moved some blocks around, forming bridgelike walkways, but Link eventually came to a point where he would need to be on three switches at the same time. Link then decided to try his hand at a song, and upon playing it, he felt like he was being lifted out of his own body, and when he turned around to see what happened, a life-sized figurine of him stood on the platform. Now Link gathered what was to be done, and used various forms of himself to stand on the switches, as only one figurine of a certain type could exist. Doing so, Link managed to create temporary bridges and scale his way up the tower into the temple at the top. He used his ocarina to send him back to day one, and then he entered the temple. Link entered the Stone Tower Temple, and his stomach went topsy-turvey almost immediately. There were doors that connected that were above him coming from the ceiling instead of the floor, and Link couldn't figure out how to access the doors. Even more interesting were the treasure chests connected to the ceiling, another puzzle that seemed impossible. Link eventually forced the sense of vertigo down and continued through the temple. He quickly noticed that this temple was like all the other three temples combined into one large nightmare, and Link learned that his skills learned as a Deku, a Goron, a Zora, and himself would be put to the test. Link found himself changing masks quite frequently, and after several extremely difficult enemies, he found a weapon that he had expected yet not expected at the same time, the Light Arrow, the same arrow Zelda had given to him in his last misadventure. Link, having explored the temple thoroughly, was a little confused as to where the deity within the temple was. He left the temple to think, and as he did, he remembered something that had caught his eye on the way in, a small red jewel on the side of the chasm wall, a gem he had never seen anywhere else in his romp across Termina. An idea grew within him, and even though his gut told him it wouldn't work, Link drew an arrow on his bow and fired it into the gem. The entire Stone Temple area inverted. Or maybe not really. Link looked up and saw the ground above him, yet the sky was still beneath him. The queasiness started to come back to Link, but Link forced himself onward, back into the temple. Yet the sickening feeling of vertigo was even worse inside the castle, as many of the platforms Link now had to walk on were narrow catwalks, and slipping off of one would send him down (or maybe up, depending upon how one looks at it) towards the sky. Link maneuvered very carefully as he went, using all of his skills as he did in the first part of the temple, this time, catching all of the chests and doors that were impossibly out of reach when he entered the temple for the first time. Link managed his way through, fighting the toughest enemies yet that he had seen, and eventually came across a second temple treasure, the Giant's Mask, a mask that would turn him into a giant. Link couldn't think of how he'd need this, but he took it and finally proceded into the next room, which had really been a room he'd seen when the temple was right-side up. Link jumped into the pit and soon found himself in a desert. Link looked around in this new surrounded, completely shocked and surprised to be where he was. It was as he gazed that two giant snakes shot out from under the ground and flew through the air over Link's head. They were the Twinmold. Link could not defeat them with his size, so he donned the Giant's Mask he had recently inherited, and Link became the size of a giant, many times taller than his previous boyish form. He drew out his sword, now bigger than the length of Ganon's blades from Link's experience with him, and he began slicing at them repeatedly, all the while mindful that his magic power was being drained, presumably from the power of the mask he was wearing. He continued slashing, and one of the two snakes finally fell to the ground, never to rise again as Link's magic was slowly eaten up. Just as it was starting to fade, Link sliced the final snake in two, and Link had defeated the final temple. He took his mask off and felt himself rise up into the land of the deity's once more, and there he saw the fourth of the gods of Termina. The god, through its limited communication with Link, tried to express his gratitude and a little encouragement to Link before Link was taken away back to now a less barren Ikana Valley. Having visited and wakened all four spirits as Tatl's brother had instructed, Link set off to Clock Town to have the final showdown with the Skullkid and Majora's Mask.
