Of Old and New: The Reason for "Newbie-ism"

Yes I am here to torment you once more; I have discovered the reason for newbie-ism! And it is: Story. Yes that is the reason for it all. I know this is hard for you all to hear, it is in fact hard for me to write, and I liked final fantasy 7 a lot (for those of you who don't know, it has the best story of any game ever.) In the old days of coin-op, there was no story (well, rarely). All there was to do was to get the most points. Nowadays, every game has at least a little story, and it makes us want the conclusion of the story. To cite FF7 as an example, after Aeris died - You DESPERATLY wanted to kill Sephiroth! And you would do anything to make his death (or in other words, the end) come sooner! And that is where the endless cycle starts. You want to know what happens next, and yet you've been stuck for days, so you ask for help! Then you finish the game, you ask for help so much you get stupid and ask for easier games. Eventually you get more stupid from not playing a hard game for so long, and you ask for more help! Making you more stupid, making you ask for easier games! So on and so on and so on! Now this is simple economics…with video games. So I suppose what I am saying is NOT that story is bad, but that story forced us to use self control, and since most of us DIDN'T use self control, we ended up where we are. So there it is, the reason. Refute me if you wish. Questions? Comments? Hate mail? (That's what I get the most of) Email me at linkskywalker14@yahoo.com
