Plotholes

Joseph Blanchette

Aka: Legendary Frog

The Zelda legend is littered with minor, and not so minor, plot holes. Landmarks change, races disappear, and people don't seem to age... even the order of the games and the number of heroes is under debate. This Essay will discuss the major plotholes and inconsistences, and will try to clear some of them up using Zelda Cannon... meaning no theories or fanboy dreams. Those that cannot be explained I will apply simple logic, and keep my personal theories out of it.

Oh, and I'm a firm believer in the Multiple Link Theory.

Ocarina of Time-

Time Travel:

Zelda and the other Sages trap Ganondorf into the Scared Realm after Link crams the Master Sword down his throat. Afterwards, she sends the hero of Time back in time seven years, to a seemingly Ganondorf free time line. History does not repeat itself as the ending suggests. Notice Link's hand? It has the mark of the Triforce of Courage. Where did Ganondorf go? Will history play out as young Link lives about his life while his past self sleeps in the Temple of Light? Or is Ganondorf simply erased from everyone memories, save for the Sages? If you remember in LttP, history tells of the Imprisoning War, where the seven sages imprisoned Ganondorf Dragmire to the Dark World. People had to remember the events or else this story would never be passed down.

Majora's Mask-

It's not over yet:

The time travel plot hole is widened as Zelda gives Link the Ocarina of Time as he sets off to Termina. However, Zelda.com states that hundreds of years pass while Link is stopping the moon from falling. History will then play it's course, Hyrule will fall, and past Link will save the day. This is, of course, using the Single Link Theory and is not supported by the GAMES AT ALL. It's fanboy rumor, even if it's on the official site.

Wrong! Isn't Zelda suppose to be hiding with Impa? It's a paradox.

Link to the Past-

Ganon and the Triforce:

How did Ganondorf get the entire Triforce? Knowing that LttP takes place after AoL over in Japan helps a little, but it's the same concept. As it stands, we don't know.

Inconsistences:

The manual states that the Master Sword was forged as a lock to keep Ganondorf in the Sacred Realm. In OoT, the Master Sword was there long before then. Judging from the fact that OoT is a game, and the other is a back story, the OoT version holds more ground.

The Descendants of the Wise Men:

Why are the decedents of the Sages as Hylian, even when they are not in OoT? Again, stories change, and you have to over look it. Cross breeding? Yeah, a Hylain would mate with a Goron...

Oracle of Seasons/Ages-

Which Link?:

Having OoT and MM character present in OoS/A is "in your face proof" that there is one Link, or that it features Link 1. That's bull. Taking a page from Zelda.com, which the SLT believers worship like it was hold writ, it claims Link spent a LONG time in Termina. Woohoo...umm...shouldn't Malon be dead? It's a cliche, but Capcom messed up, but it's very minor.

Post Majora?

If you don't believe that Link spent a long time in Termina, some say it happens after MM, so it's okay for Tingle and Ingo to be there. I guess all these character decided to move to Holodrum and Labrynna to help Link in a trading game.

Fat Impa:

Not a plot hole! Impa is simply older, SLT or MLT regardless.

Link's Awakening-

Zelda.com is stupid: LA takes place DURING AoL? That is the stupidest thing I ver heard. Rant over.

The Legend of Zelda-

None that I can think of. Besides the fact that Ganon seemed to escape the Dark World no problem, but that's due to the fact that it's the first game, so no back story was needed. However: wasn't Ganon supposed to be dead? Yes, he died in LttP, that takes place after AoL in Japan. Overlook it. Besides, when is a bad guy really dead?

The Adventure of Link-

The Sleeping Princess:

Zelda.com says it's Zelda 2. Right, Zelda 2 (2!) Has a Legend named after her. The sleeping Zelda must be a Zelda from a time before OoT, or even Zelda 1. However, Zelda 1 does not have a brother... and the manual claims Hyrule is ruled over with the Triforce...speaking of that:

The Triforce:

Even if the sleeping Princess is an ancient Zelda, how the heck did her father rule Hyrule with the Triforce if it was tucked away in the Sacred Realm? If it is Zelda 1, then it's only ruled over with the Triforce of Wisdom, but that's not supported by the manual.

---

Well, those are all the ones I can think of. I always hope a new game will address these holes, but you know that's never going to happen.

Oh well.... Joseph Blanchette "Legendary Frog", 6/19/00 mortis765@yahoo.com (who wonders what it would be like if the series was called "The Legend of Helga.")
