Link's Tenth Birthday

By: Brian Alford

The sun lights the sky
Above the trees of the Wood,
Young Link rises out of bed,
Yawns, and puts on his hood.
As he tiredly walks
Out the door of his house,
He stops in his tracks
For he hears a small mouse.
No more, and no less
The forest is silent.
He strains his sharp ears
He strains till they’re bent.
Confused and befuddled,
He climbs down to the ground.
Still with ears straining,
He hears naught a sound.
Deciding it’s too quiet
For the standard noise amplitude,
Link decides to look around
At the top altitude
The top of the village,
The upraised platform
Used to survey the village
And keep with the regular norm.
Looking across the green
Of the Kokiri village
The place was empty
Like the results of a pillage.
While pondering this mystery,
Link’s thoughts fluttered.
“What day is this?”
Link asked as he muttered.
“Today is a special day,”
Link knew this for sure.
“But what could it be?
My memory’s a blur!”
Then surveying the landscape
He noticed something strange.
The rocks on the ground
Moved around on the range.
“Come to the Deku Tree”
The rocks spelled out
“An invitation meant for me?”
Wondered Link with a pout.
Heeding the message,
Link made way to the path
Leading to the Tree
Great Powers it hath.
Snipping plants,
Hungry plants
Avoiding these,
Link clung to his pants.
Finally, to the wide open space
Of the grove of the Deku tree
Banners and streamers everywhere!
“A party for me?”
“Surprise!” the Kokiri shouted
Springing up for the surprise.
Link jumped, startled
And rubbed his disbelieving eyes.
Saria, Mido, Rala, The whole gang was there.
Celebrating Link’s tenth birthday
A happy memory Link will always bear.
