2D vs. 3D

As many of you know, the first 4 Zelda games, as well as OOA and OOS, were all in two dimensions. On the Gameboy, there has never been any other way to go (maybe we'll see 3D on GBA?). However, I've heard numerous complaints against Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask because they were in 3D. What's wrong with that? Isn't that just better graphics? Well, no, not really. We all know how eye-pleasing it can be to see Link gallop across Hyrule Field in three dimensions. However, 3D can have its downsides, as well. For example, in LOZ, it took quite a while to travel across the entire map. However, in OOT it takes a mere amount of seconds, minutes when not on Epona. Why is this? Well, for one, it's very hard to create a 3D environment that is that large. It takes a lot of time and skill. Also, how many obstacles were in Hyrule Field in OOT? A few fences? Wouldn't it get a little boring just riding on Epona for ten minutes without a major change of scenery? Just imagine walking. Also, in 3D, you can only have a limited amount of enemies on the screen at one time. Thus, 2D battles are generally a lot harder. If you don't know already, difficulty is almost always a positive trait in a game. On another note, some gamers find 3D games more confusing and harder to control. A good, simple controls system is always good. So, I guess it really comes down to your personal tastes. Decide for yourself. Remember to send in those editorials!
